Sahabzade Irrfan Ali Khan, better known as Irrfan Khan (Jaipur, 7 of January of 1967 - Bombay, 29 of April of 2020), was a film actor. He appeared, among other films, in "The Warrior" (2001), "Maqbool" (2003), "Haasil" (2004), "The Namesake" (2006), "A Mighty Heart" (2007), "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008), "Billu" (2009), "New York, I Love You" (2009), "Life of Pi" (2012) and The "Amazing Spider-Man" (2012). During his film career, he won two Filmfare Awards and a SAG Award.
Biography
Irrfan was born in Jaipur to a Muslim family. His mother, Saida Begum, was from the Tonk Hakim family, and his father, Jagirdar, was from the village of Khajuriya, near the Tonk district, and was in the tire business. Irrfan studied his Master of Arts with a scholarship to study at the National School of Drama in New Delhi in 1984.
Irfan began his acting career starring in several Indian television series. In one of them, Darr, he played the role of the main negative character, a psychopathic serial killer. His first feature film was "Salaam Bombay!" (1988) directed by Mira Nair. She saw him on stage in Delhi and persuaded him to come to Bombay. He was originally chosen to play one of the children, but turned out to be too tall and was given the role of a street scribe.
In the 1990s, he appeared in critically acclaimed films such as "Ek Doctor Ki Maut" (1990) and "Such a Long Journey" (1998), which, however, went unnoticed by the public. After several unsuccessful films, he starred in "The Warrior" (2001) by British director Asif Kapadia and gained great fame.
Personal life
On 23 February 1995, Khan was married to the screenwriter and fellow student Sutapa Sikdar. In the marriage, two sons were born - Babil Khan and Ayaan Khan, who became an actor.
He passed away at the age of fifty-three in Bombay, on April 29, 2020 due to a colon infection complicated by cancer - a neuroendocrine tumor - (diagnosed in 2018) in a Bombay hospital, where he was receiving treatment.
Career
After graduation, he moved to Bombay, where he appeared on the television shows Chanakya, Sara Jahan Hamara, Banegi Apni Baat and Chandrakanta (Doordarshan), Star Bestsellers (Star Plus), Sparsh, Darr and Kahkashan. He played the lead role in movie "The Warrior", directed by Asif Kapadia and filmed in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. The warrior was successfully screened at some international film festivals.
In 2007, he appeared on "Life in a... Metro" and won a Filmfare Award. He also played the role of a non-resident Indian in "The Namesake", directed by Mira Nair.
In 2009 he played the role of police inspector in the international film Slumdog Millionaire and won the SAG Award for Best Cast.
Sickness and death
In March 2018, Khan announced on Twitter that he was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor. He received treatment in the UK for a year before returning home in February 2019.
On April 28, 2020, he was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he began treatment for an intestinal infection. He died the next day at the age of 53 from infection, four days after the death of his mother in Jaipur.
