Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair (21 May 1960), better known as Mohanlal, is an Indian actor, producer and occasional singer who works primarily in film in Malayalam language. He has had a prolific career spanning four decades, during which he has acted in more than 300 films. Besides juggling, he has also appeared in other regional Indian films.
Biography
Born in the small town of Elanthur in Kerala state in the family of a lawyer. He graduated from high school, then the Reference School and College. Mahatma Gandhi in Thiruvananthapuram with BA in Commerce. Subsequently, he received his doctorate in Sanskrit. He won his first award for Best Actor at the age of 12, when he was still in school and participated in amateur performances. He played his first film role in 1978, gained relative fame in 1980. Since that time, he has played in a total of over 300 films in Malayalam alone, not counting films in other languages. The most famous films with his participation are the paintings "Tandem" (1997) and "Company" (2002).
Mohanhal is known not only as an actor, but also as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, as well as a filmmaker. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Malayalam Film Directors Association, and since 2006 has been the head of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). In 2001, for his contribution to Indian cinema, he was awarded the Padma Shri award. In 2009 he was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel of the Indian army.
Career
He made his acting debut as a teenager in the 1978 film Thiranottam, but the production delayed its release due to censorship issues. His screen debut came in the 1980 romantic film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in which he played the villain. In the following years, interpreted antagonistic characters in several films and gradually rose to secondary roles. By the mid 1980s, he established himself as the lead actor. He gained stardom after starring in a series of commercially successful films in 1986, the drama Rajavinte Makan released that year increased his popularity on the local scene.
Mohanlal prefers to work on Malay-language productions, but has also appeared in some films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. Some of his notable films in languages other than juggling include the political drama Tamil "Iruvar" (1997), the Hindi drama "Company" (2002), and the Telugu action film Janatha Garage (2016). He has received five national film awards: two for best actor and one award for best film (as producer), also nine Kerala State and Filmfare South awards and many other accolades. In 2001, the government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor in the country, for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2008, while filming the movie Kurukshetra, in which he played a colonel in the Indian army, the actor expressed interest in joining the Indian Territorial Army, but was unable to enter due to exceeding the age allowed for the position. However, in 2009 he became the first actor to receive the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit in 2010.
Personal life
Mohanlal resides with his family in Kerala. He married Suchitra, daughter of Tamil film producer K. Balaji on April 28, 1988. The couple have two children: Pranav Mohanlal and Vismaya Mohanlal. Pranav acted in some films, debuting in Onnaman (2001). Mohanlal did not object when his son expressed a desire to act. He owns a house in Ooty and a flat in Burj Khalifa in Dubai. He describes himself as a religious and spiritual person and likes to read Osho, J. Krishnamurti, Aurobindo and Ramana Maharshi. He has often stated that the turn of events in his life, including his film career, was totally accidental. His older brother, Pyarelal, died in 2000 during a military exercise.
