She speaks many languages: English, Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, and Marathi, and her mother tongue is Tulu, which is only spoken by two million people.

Early years and career as a model
Rai was born into a Tulu language family, in Mangalore, Karnataka. Her father, Krishnaraj, was an Army biologist, while her mother, Brinda, is a housewife. The film was a commercial success, and Rai received praise for her acting and dancing. Unlike Iruvar, Rai has practiced and dubbed her own lines in the film. Jeans was later presented as the official entry of India for the Academy Awards for 1998. Her second role in Bollywood was in 1999 in the Melodrama Aa Ab Laut Chalen, directed by Rishi Kapoor. The film was a critical failure and had a lower than average performance at the box office.
